Saffron is a spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus. More than 75,000 crocus flowers are needed to produce one pound of saffron.
It is one of the most exotic and expensive spices available, commonly known as red gold.
Saffron is grown commercially primarily in India, Spain and Iran. But the Kashmir variety is considered the best and it is the most expensive.
The spice is used extensively in medicines and cooking in Indian cuisine while there are also claims that saffron is an aphrodisiac.
